In Detour, a woman sits suspended between interior worlds — her own thoughts and the encroaching vastness beyond her windshield. The painting captures that charged stillness before movement, before consequence — the instant where reflection becomes decision. Bathed in a crimson glow, she inhabits a private storm of smoke and memory, while outside the night stretches cold and infinite, a royal blue abyss where danger gathers its shape.
The tornado on the horizon is both literal and psychic — an emblem of the unseen forces that pull at us from afar. I wanted the painting to exist in that threshold between calm and collapse, beauty and dread. Like many of my works, Detour dwells in the poetics of tension: the feminine as an intersection of control and vulnerability, the cinematic light as a language for interior emotion.
In the context of Reverie, this piece explores the act of pausing within chaos — the strange serenity found when the world tilts, and we find ourselves momentarily illuminated by our own uncertainty.
