Cedar Clad Saltbox -
Refers to the Cedar wood used for "shakes" (siding) and roofing shingles in a majority of First-generation New England Homes. Cedar is remarkably resistant to rot and insect infestation, making it an ideal material for making a home to last generations. It also was a material that was available locally at that time, making the structures fit naturally into their environment (adding to the local architectural vernacular). "Saltbox" refers to the long sloped back shape of the house, a common form seen in multigenerational New England homes. Such homes tended to start as a basic box shape, with additions to the home being added on in subsequent years as the family grew in size.
