Ahab and Stubb-
Captain Ahab, Moby Dick (Melville), represented as a one-legged osprey.
Also from Moby Dick, Stubb, the 2nd mate of the Pequod, for him I chose a belted kingfisher.
Both osprey and kingfisher survive by fishing. In my experience, osprey’s tend to be tyrannical and/or obsessive. A disheveled, one-legged osprey seemed reasonable as a stand-in for Ahab.
The belted kingfisher is much more endearing and charismatic in my opinion. Stubb is one of the more likable characters from Melville’s doorstop of a novel.
