This work was a preliminary painting for my Bayton Award entry for 2019. It pays reference to Victorian photography of Mother's and children, where rather sinisterly the mother would be obscured under a curtain or tapestry, to only show the infant in the photo - a hidden mother. It also pays reference to the invisibility I feel as not only a Mother, but as a white, middle-aged woman within the art sector. As my demographic seems to be almost invisible at times, not commonly highlighted by the art establishment.
