The Gerst Haus Restaurant is everyone's favorite eatery for experiencing authentic German cuisine and atmosphere in Evansville, Indiana. You know, the place you want to visit when you move away and come back home. Although known for its large fish bowls of beer and traditional German fare, it was originally built as the Heldt & Voelker Hardware Store in 1890 and is one of the first commercial buildings in Evansville to be converted into a restaurant. On your next visit, check out the back of the menu with its history lesson and a certain someone's photograph.

This photo was everyone's favorite in my solo show "Fall In Love with Franklin Street". I prefer the black and white version, but either way it exemplifies lots of detail in its Italianate and Eastlake architecture. And I am glad private investors, brothers Jerry and Jim Chandler, restored this gem!
