This is sari inspired by the Sun Temple at Konark in Odisha. The Sun Temple is carved in the shape of a chariot. It is drawn by seven horses, representing the days of the week and has 12 stone wheels, representing the months of the year. Each wheel has 8 spokes representing 3 hour intervals, in all 24 hours. The spokes of the wheel form the shape of a sundial.
I started this sari in India with the intention of completing the embellishment when I returned to Australia.
I have block printed motifs of the wheels and hanks of Tussah silk. The Sari is handwoven khadi cotton, dyed with madder to a strong red brown and block printed several times and then embellished.
