MessageKyoto Muse
My Uncle used to travel to Japan as a Greek merchant marine and would return with gorgeous dolls for my Mom. The beauty of the dolls captivated me from an early age and they have regularly starred as subjects within my art practice. Originating from an appreciation for modern Japanese design, I created this portrait over ten years ago in a serendipitous combination of finding online inspiration and an eclectic jackpot of supplies. It is one of two figurative collages I created at the time, that jumpstarted my creative process and paved the way for my present work. This image is an acknowledgement of that significant milestone and all that has followed in my personal and professional journey since then. Traveling to Japan some years later and visiting Gion, the geisha district of Kyoto, was a lifelong dream come true. I believe that listening to our creative muse leads us towards the actions that ultimately help us fulfill our dreams.
