Message“Kintsugi Parasol” comes together to represent personal healing and history, while honoring sustainability and untapped potential. When I received this item, it had minor damage but had been salvaged. Inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese philosophy of tending breakage with repair to showcase inherent beauty, I decided to restore it with an updated aesthetic. I patched any punctures and tears with layers of gold fibrous paper; in some spots, the patches are thick and coarse, reminiscent of protective scar tissue. The parasol border is embellished with antique, vintage and ephemera papers that have also been salvaged and curated from around the globe. Using the same color palette as the original motifs, I tore the paper edges for contrast with the intricate illustration style. Lastly, I used museum putty to cushion the loose and broken spoke within the frame that has caused most of the punctures. Imperfection and evolution are embraced as the faithful teachers guiding any work in progress.
