In my paintings, I focus on authentic subjects from my immediate surroundings. I strive to embrace the beauty and wonder of nature in its multitude of forms - fields and trees, rivers and lakes, the ever-changing sky and the seasonal changes so integral to Michigan.
I often take my inspiration from hikes and camping trips where the sounds and sights of nature are ever-present. My process begins with direct observation. Often working outdoors on location, I render my initial observations in a value-based series of drawings. Through these, I seek to become familiar with and understand the space and emphasis of the composition so that when I approach the painting my process is intuitive and fluid.
A recurring feature in my work is the simplified composition that relies upon a close-up perspective. Because I’m not concerned with elaborate detail, I am able to incorporate expressive brushwork and bold finger-painting in a way that would otherwise not be possible. I strive to create a balanced painting in which composition, subject, color and brushwork are blended harmoniously.
I painted this painting while camping at Leelanau State Park!
