This work won the Golden Bear award at the California State Fair. The subjects posed as they were about to leave the Oklahoma dustbowl to travel to California. The year 1931 is just visible at the bottom. It would take 3 years for them to complete the journey to California. The judge, who was a curator at the Crocker Museum, compared the work to American Gothic.
