"My work is composite-based photography. I explore the boundaries between modern and traditional; photography and drawing; realism and abstraction; pop and conceptual; metaphor and representation. A compilation over minutes, hours and days becomes distilled into a single frame, revealing a stillness that resides underneath or inside the moment.
My work is based on ideas of transience, transcendence, and impermanence. I explore the co-existence of movement and stillness; a cohabitation of contemplation and restlessness; a formal plane of both flatness and depth. A particular focus of my work is the evolution of the perceived landscape created in part by the pervasive acceleration of images in modern life, which in turn has exponentially intensified and dulled our cognitive understanding of our environments.
My landscape work explores the inherent duality of the horizontal landscape. For me this duality can be considered in a spiritual, political, or metaphorical way.
It’s my hope that my work is received with a spirit of communication and openness. My intention is to create pieces that are at once dynamic and calming. I see this practice not as an escape from reality, but as a way of connecting ever more clearly with it.
My process is many steps. I photograph extensively in a given environment to make base images for studio composites. After the base image is completed I work an image using digital studio and darkroom techniques including: drawing, blending color, softening areas, line and brush work, and taking an overall reductive approach to an image. Visible pixels are removed so my work can be printed very large and perceived closer to drawing than photography. " Danae Fallier
