In late October, I drove out to Golden Garden Ponds for a quick photo walk in the pale autumn rain. My Mom just passed age 95 last June, and I remembered that she and I often visited these ponds. I passed the bench where she used to sit and gaze ecstatically out over the water, thrilled with the swirling flocks of geese rising and falling off the pond as the sunset exploded and reflected off the water.
Both of my parents were so passionate about the landscape. Now, impossibly, inevitably, both are gone, and I am the last generation standing. I wanted to make a photograph that spoke to their loss, the way some color has been drained out of my life by their passing, but that also remembered a simple view that Mom rejoiced in.
