He Mauri, exhibition title piece, window frontage MODAL House, 845 New North Rd, Mt Albert by Dr Rangihiroa Panoho Image: The Albert-Eden Local Board defines mauri in the following way:

'Mauri is the life force of all components of the waterway: the living plants and animals, the waters and rocks, and the energy which binds it all. Mauri is a symbol of vitality, life andhealth.'

Mauri is also present in wānanga 'the tribal stories we tell - narratives' This window installation at Modal House is the title piece for He Mauri. The cyanotype print on cotton/linen was created with natural UV in Ōwairaka during February 2024 after a number of months of experimenting with the technique on paper and fibre on a smaller scale. This work features a banana leaf that comes from a Rarotongan specimen I grew on in my own garden and which I shared with the Cook Island artist/curator Jim Vivieaere (who also lived locally in Mt Albert). I was interested in the mystical ethereal nature of the prussian blue of cyanotype in helping create a mood for 'He Mauri' and also in setting the work in a timeless state that suggested the continuum I needed to recount wānanga 'ancesrtal narratives'.
