Rosemarie Beck (Rosemarie Beck Foundation)
Rosemarie Beck (1923 - 2003) emerged in the mid-50s as a figurative painter; she was a beloved teacher and mentor, and a gifted artist.
MessageAt first glance, this shimmering work might almost pass as one of Beck’s oil paintings, but closer inspection reveals it to be one of her extraordinarily detailed embroidered textiles. A group of angels is playing chamber music together on stringed instruments, in an outdoor setting, most likely Tuscany, where Beck had visited family. Although almost never incorporated into her paintings, angels frequently appear in her annual holiday cards, which she created from handmade linocuts. The date of this work - 1988 or 89 - is somewhat questionable, as her “Concert in Tuscany” Series featuring chamber music players only began in the late 1990s. But having played in similar chamber groups for most of her adult life, it is not impossible that this piece is an early iteration of this theme. In 2012, gallery owner Lori Bookstein wrote "It seems almost counter-intuitive that Beck was able to imbue her embroideries with such dynamism considering the tedious nature of needlework, however, the rough surfaces and the angularity of the stitches amplify the drama of the story in a way that seems particularly unique to the medium of embroidery."
