The piece is consisting of three biblical stories from Old Testament which you can tell from the title of it. Nehemia worked in rebuilding Jerusalem during the Second Temple period. He was governor of Persian Judea under Artaxerxes I of Persia. Ezra was living in Babylon when in the seventh year (457 BC) of Artaxerxes, king of Persia, the king sent him to Jerusalem to teach the laws of God to any who did not know them. Ezra led a large body of exiles back to Jerusalem. Some years later Artaxerxes sent Nehemiah to Jerusalem as governor with the task of rebuilding the city walls. Esther was a Jewish queen of the Persian king Ahasuerus. "Esther" may have been connected with the Persian word for "star." Esther became queen of Persia and thwarts genocide of her Jewish people. Modern day Persian Jews are called "Esther's Children" for over 2400 years. As an Indonesian, Eddy Susanto reminds from his work the Javanese colonial history. Susanto’s vast knowledge of history both of Europe and Asia and his philological attention for detail are not merely conceptual but also reflecting the cultural identity and coordination, as much as the importance of understanding one another among different culture backgrounds.
