Artist: 袁永康 YUAN Yong-Kang (Taiwan, b. 1987)

YUAN Yong-Kang (b. 1987), graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan University of the Arts, and went to Germany for further studies. In 2018, he received a diploma from the Offenbach University of Art and Design.
In the creative process, it is rare to refer to drafts, but to directly transfer the images that come to mind to the canvas. This "transfer" is similar to a process from scratch, as in a labyrinth with multiple exits: the creator tries to transform the vague ideas in his head onto a blank canvas, and iteratively revises, ponders, and changes The final image is developed (finding an exit) in a certain state. The final image is often very different from the original idea. "Unexpected" and "improvisation" play a very important role in painting creation. In this way of painting, the final appearance of the painting is often unpredictable, which is more or less different from the original idea. The occasional and unexpected effects in the process of painting will be retained and become the basis for the next step in painting. When painting, the images that come to mind are mostly human bodies, and sometimes the human body and objects often used in the artist's studio are matched together. Through the "transfer" of the painting process, the shape of the human body is reshaped, away from the established impression we are familiar with: it is sometimes streamlined to consist of only spheres and rods, and sometimes it is just a kneading of paint and color blocks Combination and stacking do not have exact contours; or they combine plant or insect characteristics so that the viewer cannot really interpret it as a "human" body. The human body appears in an unreasonable form in the painting, prompting the viewer to rethink the perception of the body. We can ask here, when the body no longer conforms to its original external appearance, and no longer refers objectively to its biological function, what abstract meaning can it extend? Can it be regarded as a carrier of human primitive instinct or mental state? Or does it play an intermediary role in the outer world and inner consciousness?
