About Dominick Tascher

Dominick Tascher is a French-born, self-taught mixed-media artist whose work explores the intersection of memory, symbolism, and cultural narrative through layered abstraction. Born in Bordeaux, France, he developed an early sensitivity to visual culture while growing up in a city steeped in architectural history, painting, and music.

Although Tascher pursued a career in medicine, his artistic practice remained a constant thread in his life. A move to the Caribbean in the late 1980s proved pivotal: the vivid light, color, and cultural energy of St. Martin rekindled his commitment to painting and expanded his visual language.

Now based in Southwest Florida, Tascher’s work draws on the gestural freedom of Abstract Expressionism, the fractured perspectives of Cubism, and the raw immediacy of Street Art. His compositions often combine bold color, texture, and symbolic forms, creating layered surfaces that suggest both personal and historical narratives. Influenced by his practice of Zen Buddhism, his process embraces spontaneity, intuition, and the balance between control and chance.

Tascher lives and works in Southwest Florida and is a resident artist at Union Artist Studios at the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers.

Statement

My work explores the space between memory, intuition, and symbolism through layered abstraction. I approach painting as both an act of discovery and a form of visual meditation. Surfaces are built gradually—through gesture, texture, color, and sometimes collage—allowing unexpected relationships to emerge. Rather than beginning with a fixed image, I let the work evolve through a dialogue between intention and chance.

Influenced by movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Cubism, and the immediacy of Street Art, my paintings combine spontaneous mark-making with structured visual elements. Fragmented shapes, bold color fields, and recurring symbolic forms create compositions that suggest narratives without fully defining them. I am interested in the tension between control and unpredictability—between what is consciously placed and what reveals itself during the process.

My practice is also informed by Zen Buddhism, which encourages presence, intuition, and the acceptance of imperfection. Painting becomes a moment of attention, where each gesture responds to the previous one. The finished work reflects this layered process, inviting viewers to find their own meaning within the textures, symbols, and rhythms of the surface.

Ultimately, my paintings are spaces of reflection—where personal memory, cultural echoes, and spontaneous creation intersect.
