British artist James Alphege Brewer was best known for his picturesque and highly detailed architectural drawings of various cathedrals and churches. There is a scared beauty displayed in this massive etching of the interior chapel scene. Interacting with the natural light residing in a very ornate and shadow riddled space, Brewer uses the element of value to set a mystical and reverent mood within the composition. Not only is the feeling of regal holiness implied but the human element isn’t ignored as Brewer’s figures interact within such scared spaces. This juxtapositioning of human within or near the religious constructions is an important hallmark in his work. In many ways the light and dark work together to create a dichotomy of the earthly and divine allowing us to pause and meditate while we focus in on the various details rendered throughout.
