Artist Statement

“Over the years of my career, I have moved between overt expressions of landscape stimulated by the open spaces of Illinois, Nebraska and eastern Colorado. The abstract works are influenced by personal meditations in regard to natural forces that bring birth, growth, death and regeneration.

I do like storm imagery, and some of the paintings are reflections on cataclysms and nature’s raw power. In terms of my style or approach, I enjoy the sensuous play of paint on a textured surface (usually a moderately textured cotton duck or linen canvas), and often use the palette knife for direct application of paint to that surface.”

Artist Bio

Richard Terrell is a Professor of Art Emeritus at Doane College in Crete, NE where he taught courses in design, drawing, commercial art, illustration, painting, art history and interdisciplinary studies for 40 years.

He earned his BFA at Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, and his MFA at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His paintings, prints and drawings have been show in numerous solo and competitive exhibitions since 1965. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Nebraska Art and the Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, NE.
