I work in a variety of media, with a primary focus on oil painting with richness and depth of color and detail. I spend a good deal of time outdoors, where I am constantly hunting for color wonder, flaws and idiosyncrasies, shadow and light play, interesting contrasts, and naturally appealing composition. As a result, my contemporary fine art portfolio runs the gamut from portraits and figurative work, to seascapes, botanical work… and now cityscapes.
Sometimes the unexpected discoveries I make outside get me to take giant leaps and tackle uncharted territory. This is the case with Highland Blues. I stumbled across a hauntingly beautiful alley on a walk in the last light of day after an early blizzard. The colors were so unexpectedly magical in the no man’s land between nightfall and late afternoon that I actually backed up and took my gloves off in the bitter cold to take reference shots. I decided in that moment to attempt a cityscape. This is newer territory for me, and yet it is also overlaps common themes for my work: the haunting beauty of transitions, the play of color, light and shadow, interesting juxtapositions and contrasts… and, as always, mood and emotion.
