This work portrays numerous widows, rather than the brides represented in Lyanne's earlier work. The title "Infinity" emphasizes how many widows exist, which is reinforced by the triptych format. Although the women stand together, they do not interact. Some of their bodies are cut off vertically from the panels, suggesting a lack of completeness.
This painting was done a year after Lyanne began her powerful series focusing on elderly women. She developed her visual vocabulary based upon precedents in Western art. The figures are not portraits of specific individuals but are created “types,” giving her work a universal appeal.
