Since we have all been caged during the pandemic, I thought creating a sculpture that suggested the ability to fly free, seemed appealing. As I was doing a bit of research about the crow, I found that the crow has been used as a symbol of mystery, change and transformation. I also found out that it is a member of the Corvid family—whose spelling is very close to the word, Covid, which has become the word haunting us all the past several months, so it seemed even more appropriate for me to choose the crow as my subject.
I wanted the viewer to feel that this little scene was something that they might actually see if they were walking around on a farm where old tools had been left lying about; that if they turned their head at just the right moment they might see this crow landing—and yet, that there was something surreal about what they were seeing.
