By 1884 there were 150 miners working the Coal Cliff Colliery. Most of these men and their families lived here in Clifton. Just two years after the opening of the mine, the Illawarra Mercury reported that the township had grown to a population of 'near 1000 residents' . The community boasted its own station, school, two churches, post and telegraph office, bakery and licensed coaching inn.
