From the series 'Xaley-Fashion and the Dirriankhe'.
A young 'diskette' in a nightclub in Dakar.
In her book 'Marabout Women in Dakar: Creating Trust in a Rural Urban Space', Amber B. Gemmeke explains: "A diskette is a slim, trendy young woman dressed in 'western' style, usually in tight-fitting jeans or pants and top. Most Dakarois trace the origin of the word 'diskette' to the 1980s when disco music was popular among young people who dressed in western style to dance at nightclubs (Nyamnjoh 2005: 299). Although the term 'diskette' is usually associated with young, unmarried women in their teens or early twenties who go out clubbing, today the term is applied to any girl or woman who dresses in western style."
