My light art is an optical exploration of the shared space of science and art, blurring the lines between experimentation, observation, and transformation. These works begin as scientific examinations of the optical qualities of light, which I bring to form through artistic expression.
Each Lumiere sculpture encourages a sense of wonder, an alchemy of the recognizable and the mysterious. This apparent dichotomy is challenged as a Lumiere functions as both a tabletop lamp, and a source of discovery.
Lumieres are atmosphere changers that transform repurposed domestic glassware, such as bowls, glasses, vases, plates, and pitchers, into mesmerizing glowing forms. Lumieres are a visual discovery of the untapped potential of domestic objects.
They invite everyday wonder, accessible to us all, revealed in the discovery that your grandmother's candy dish under illumination can transform a familiar space, and a familiar object, through the magic of unexpected light.
My Lumieres re-format spaces and our sense of them. They colorize familiar rooms in new ways, and bring attention to unnoticed details, both in the glass lens, and in the illumination of unconventional aspects of the everyday space. They add dimension to flat surfaces, and convolute ideas about the mundane and the sacred.
Lumieres are experiments in perception that invite viewers to rediscover familiar objects through unfamiliar light. By reclaiming and transforming repurposed domestic glassware, I reveal the hidden beauty and the potential of light we see every day, but don’t notice.
Lumieres are atmosphere changing tabletop lamps that offer more than light; they offer a moment of awe, a spark of imagination, and a rediscovery of the overlooked.
They bring a host of new discoveries, including new appreciation of a familiar domestic glass object, and perhaps awe at one’s own space in beautiful new light, and moreover, the knowledge that you can transform the way your world looks and feels with a simple object, and the simple gesture of turning on a Lumiere.
