Each rectangle is also a stack of 9 views, shellacked together to reveal the other 'dimensions' as faintly visible layers beneath the surface.

A tesseract is a four-dimensional 'cube', also known as a hypercube or 4-cube. The tesseract is to the cube as the cube is to the square - a three-dimensional cube extended into the fourth dimension.
