DEBORAH JAFIF
STATEMENT 2025
Since my childhood, thread has been my way of connecting with the world. I learned to embroider with my grandmother, and ever since, it has become my means of expression. With it, I join thoughts, weave ideas, and transform everyday materials into visual narratives.
The thread, almost invisible, leaves a trace, unites, tears, and writes my story. It predates writing; it weaves the world as words construct language. Each stitch adds time, each thread gives body to the work.
I never stop thinking, imagining, and spinning. The thread and I are connected, creating a language of our own where memory, the present, and the future intertwine in each weave.

About the work
Neuronal Cartographies visually translates the cerebral network through threads, fibers, and textures, evoking the synaptic connections that enable the transmission of information within our brain.
Through textile techniques—embroidery, weaving, and assemblage—a visual metaphor of these mental maps is constructed, where each stitch represents a connection, an idea, or a memory.
The textile medium, by virtue of its flexible and organic nature, becomes a mirror of thought: something that can be structured, unraveled, and rewoven. The work raises an essential question: Can we train the mind to redraw its own maps? To think differently?
