LIMBO "Cher"
She stands the way portraits have always demanded — composed, contained, correct. The pleated collar frames her like a painting that already knows its place in history. And then: a bubble. Pale blue, perfectly round, expanding in the silence between centuries. It shouldn't be there. That's exactly why it is. Contradiction is the first step toward freedom.

Ale Arroyo is an Argentine visual artist and photographer with over 21 years of experience at the intersection of classical portraiture and contemporary culture. Her work is built around constructed scenes — conceived, directed, and captured entirely in camera, without digital retouching or artificial intelligence.
In her series LIMBO (2023–ongoing), figures appear dressed in period-accurate garments with the composure of Old Master portraits. Then something breaks the illusion: a bubble of gum, a toy Formula 1 car balanced on a head, a bag of chips held with aristocratic calm, a pair of rubber gloves raised like a scepter. The humor is not decoration — it is the entry point. Each work asks, quietly and precisely: which of our inherited ideas did we actually choose?
Arroyo serves as an international juror for 35AWARDS. Her work has been exhibited across Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Spain (Madrid, Barcelona), the United Kingdom (London), and the United States (Miami, San Francisco). She is represented by GALLERyLABs.
