April was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF) at age 2. Her school years proved difficult as she was constantly made in fun of due to her appearance with NF and skin color. Growing up, she embraced Star Trek. In Star Trek appearance meant nothing just the character's actions mattered.
