Who I am and Who I am not #2 by Miki Nishida Goerdt Image: This set of three images explores the impact of racial stereotyping and the toll it takes on Asian women’s lives. I started working on these images shortly after the 2021 shootings at Atlanta massage spas, where six of eight victims were Asian women. The silhouette on left depicts a profile of Geisha, symbolizing the stereotype of Asian women as sexual objects — in reality, Geishas are professional entertainers and do not provide sex as a part of their work. The silhouette on the right depicts the shape of a Kokeshi doll, symbolizing the stereotype that Asian women are “cute like a schoolgirl” and without opinions of their own. The opinions they do have are considered to hold no value. Sandwiched between these two is my own silhouette, which does not resemble either one.
Through these silhouettes, I invite viewers to consider the stereotypical beliefs they might have about Asians. Awareness of the harmful presumptions we see others through can be the start of creating a society where we see each other instead as unique and complex human beings.
