Legacy burdens and legacy gifts are what your ancestors, including your parents, pass on to you---that is, the ways they handled life challenges, emotions, and conflicts. These ways pass down from one generation to the next like inherited property. Your ancestors' ways of coping may not work for you (“legacy burdens”) or they may bring resilience to your life (“legacy gifts”).What I can do in my own life, first of all, is to examine what I received from my ancestors and to understand it. And then I can ask myself if I want to continue honoring what I’ve received or whether to let some of this inheritance go.
