The Vault: Miki Nishida Goerdt - Remembering to Heal

On Site Exhibition
Assimilation by Miki Nishida Goerdt Image: Cultural assimilation is a process by which individuals from marginalized cultures merge into the dominant culture by letting go of their home cultures in order to survive. This piece depicts the assimilation process that I experienced as an immigrant in the U.S. The bottom house is yellow, and the Japanese writing inside is clearly visible. As I move up the ladder, the house becomes more white with only a faint trace of Japanese writing inside.
