On a crisp winter’s morning I took a stroll through Richmond, bought an ice cream and as
we continued our ice confectionary grazing, we came upon a tranquil watercourse, the Coal
River. A Google search of the “Coal River Tasmania” merely finds references to the historical
significant Bridge, the town of Richmond and the farming areas of the Coal River Valley. The
river itself has little identity and yet without it the significant bridge, historic Town and
continued agricultural economies would not exist. But like most mothers it settles into the
background nurturing and supporting without accolade. The Coal River not only plays an
integral part in shaping Tasmania’s history but also supports the lifecyle of a natural habitat.
It’s facilities are non-discriminatory, non seasonally restrictive, and visually accessible. The
Coal River is a beautiful community asset and has been quietly sustaining the surrounding
Landscape for hundreds of years . I think it is an over looked Tasmanian Landscape which
deserves artistic recognition.
