Exploring wildness and constraint in nature and artMessage
With over 30 years of serving civic, nonprofit and personal development organizations, I've cultivated a professional career growing mission-driven brands.
I'm a multi-disciplinary leader and military veteran who coaches entrepreneurs and small business owners to build visionary brands, articulate compelling messages and navigate the tech that gets them seen and heard by lifelong customers.
In 2016, I founded Of Ink + Insight, a creative incubator for intuitive writing workshops called Insight Writing® which promotes the development of mindful behaviors and the free expression of one's inner dialogue.
Motivated by the existential crisis of the pandemic, I turned toward a lifelong desire to create visual art and embarked on a self-guided journey to explore a wide variety of mediums, techniques and applications, with strong leanings toward mixed media collage and abstract botanical paintings.
In 2021, I became an emerging artist member of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association and have started to submit work for exhibit, beginning with the 2022 NEMAA 10x10 public art fundraiser.
Wildness and constraint coexist.
I begin intuitively, with loose intentions and a bit of vintage ephemera to give initial layers texture and history. I move with the energy of play, experimentation and freedom.
The moment arrives when a painting begins to speak, offering clues to its purpose - a memory, a feeling, a dream, the preciousness of the present moment. And often, poetry, climate, flora.
In final stages, after a journey of many layers, strong shapes surface offering something solid, dense or bold in response to the wildness of its youth. Sanding and glazing make it soft, familiar, timeless.
Mixed media means no material is off-limits and ‘rules’ are flexible. I lean toward abstract and semi-abstract work to allow more of my moody, inner world to be represented.
I make art for the way it makes me feel in the process of making it - contemplative, cathartic, integrated. And that kind of medicine is what I hope is translated to the viewer.
