The Gray Lady is a play on words eluding to the location of Nantucket (often referred to as such). Once the worlds foremost whaling port, fog would often swoop in on sailors quite unexpectedly creating a foreboding situation. In this painting, a woman looks out to the tumultuous sea almost as if lost in a trance, beckoned to the dangerous waters. A seagull often regarded as a symbol of hope, resilience and adaptability reminds her the woman how the tides can change and just as quickly turn from hopelessness to more favourable opportunities.
