"Growing up on a farm whose structures dated back to the 1800’s, my affinity for beguiling dilapidated barns and houses developed early. Even as a child painting with my first set of watercolours, I remarked and recorded the unusual gems which dotted my surrounding landscape and region of Eastern Ontario. Those buildings, once the homestead of early settlers, speak to their heritage through the choice of materials, architecture and careful orientation to the land giving us a glimpse at the lives and hardships therein. I can’t help but think about their long winters, the hooves that were shoed, the cows that were milked, the births, the deaths, the crops, the early mornings, the raw knuckles and calloused hands… Now, having returned home to the area where I grew up, many such barns have collapsed completely, been built over or replaced by austere aluminum and steel. I, more than ever, feel compelled to paint and tell their story. Here, in “Shade Seekers”, this lovely house provides a shelter for these local cattle. This too will become part of this home’s journey and story."
