The Royal Meeting at Ascot Racecourse is steeped in tradition, dating back more than 300 years. The royal procession, one of the most celebrated traditions at Ascot, commenced in 1825 with King George IV, who had a great love of pageantry and pomp. The six-mile procession from Windsor Castle to the saddling enclosure at Ascot has become a crowd favorite and one of the most highly anticipated moments of the Royal Meeting.
Attendees of the meeting can experience standing at the edge of the balcony and taking in the vast hordes of racegoers in their traditional Ascot attire. A great cheer goes up and all heads wrench to the left, looking down the long expanse of the “new-mile”, waiting to catch a glimpse of the notorious Windsor Greys and the stately landau carriage making its way toward the grandstand.
One of the more recent traditions of the royal meeting began when book makers made odds on the color of hat that Queen Elizabeth would wear on opening day. The Queen’s hat color bet quickly became a crowd favorite and is one of the most popular bets placed on opening day.
