Voss painted commissioned portraits of foxhounds and other dogs throughout his career. Many of his early commissions were of dogs, and eighty percent of the 1912 entries in his commission book were for paintings of dogs. Voss probably painted this American foxhound for Anderson Fowler in 1939, the same year he painted the portrait of Fowler on Peacock, also in this sale. Fowler was a master of the Essex Foxhounds in New Jersey.
