Many of Collins works are inspired in part by found photographs of the 1800’s, the photographs of Eadward Muybridge, and images of her own ancestors in the 1800’s and 1900’s. For the 12:00 ensemble of works, Collins engages a journey which begins in 1831 in France and Algeria and the creation of the French Legion – or more precisely the French Foreign Legion. Using the image of a Legionnaire and his horse, Collins shows us snapshots of how relationships change over the course of an hour. The twelve original paintings that comprise this group work, each named for 5 minute intervals of the clock, show us how every relationship in life is in motion, constantly changing. In some works, the focus is aimed more upon the horse, in others the man, still others show unwavering commitment, calm, and still others show fear. The collages themselves use both aged paper and manuscripts from the 1800’s and 1900’s, from an intersection of life, children’s’ stories, magazines, historical documents. Layer upon layer of images for the viewer to find over time. It is also no accident that Collins choses the foreign legionnaire, because by his nature, the legionnaire was an outsider, a man of the world, belonging to no master, but exactingly loyal to his horse, the relationship on which his very survival depends. The loyalty is returned as a perfect mirror, for the soul of the horse is dependent, likewise on another for survival.
