James (Jim) O. Milmoe (1927–2022) was born in Pittsburg and was an internationally renowned photographer, educator, and founding member of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center. Over his 60 year career, he was instrumental in the establishment of photographic arts as a serious discipline in Colorado. Jim passed his knowledge down, teaching creative photography at the University of Colorado, the University of Denver, and the University of California at Berkley as early as 1959. These courses were among the first of their kind in the nation. Milmoe's work and impact were recognized during his lifetime, and in 1969, he joined the Photographic Society of America as a fellow after being nominated by Ansel Adams. His work is shown in prestigious galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Art Institute of Chicago.
