Artist Bio:
Odette England is the 2020-21 Artist-in-Residence at Amherst College and a resident artist of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Program in New York. Her work has shown in more than 100 solo, two-person, and group exhibitions worldwide. England is also a 2021 Light Work Artist in Residence; a recipient of this year’s Silver Eye Center for Photography Fellowship; and a nominee for the 2021 Prix Pictet.
Odette England uses photography, performance, text, and the archive to examine the idea of home. She uses her camera to both quench and kill memories by ‘renovating’ family snapshots and photographing isolated lands. She often manipulates and injures her negatives and prints by hand, degrading their surfaces. She refuses to abandon her rural roots, and so recreates them through performing with photographs she makes and inherits.
