The slag train - a series of open ladle cars used in Pittsburgh’s steel industry to transport molten slag, the waste material left after smelting iron. Once filled, these cars were hauled from nearby mills and tilted to pour the glowing byproduct down steep hillsides, creating the man-made “slag mountains” that once surrounded the city.
