Laurie McCormick's formal training in photography began in her windowless kitchen of her basement apartment in Boston in the early 70's. She set up her first dark room there and as she was developing her images, she discovered that she felt most at home behind the camera. It was at this juncture that she began blending together that certain moment in time into a meaningful art form. Everything about the process felt right to her.
Still to this day, some 50 years later, she serves her viewers with the raw creations she cooks up in my now 'light filled' kitchen in California. The main ingredients today, when photographing at home, are her life long collection of miniatures that she has set up in different series. Her most renowned series is "Miniature Appetite."
Outside her home, she is best known for her Travel Photography, especially her Award Winning Image: 'Cuban Cool' captured in Cuba in 2013; and her Award Winning Image: 'Outside Diner' captured in San Miguel de Allende in 2018.
I had the great fortune to visit Cuba in 2011 and 2013 and one of my goals was to meet the people of Cuba, visit their homes, get to know them and to photograph them in their environment.
These 10 portraits are from my Series "Eyes of Cuba". One of the most striking things I noticed on both visits was how the Cuban people look straight into your eyes and how serious they are about life.
I felt a real connection to these people. They have lived a hard life, they work hard, and they are given very little from their government. Every month each family is given a bar of soap to bath with, wash their clothes with and wash their dishes with, so I brought with me to hand out many bars of soap, shampoo, body lotion and other toiletries, as well as aspirin, antacids, etc. items they most often go without. The bottom line: the Cubans are very proud and humble people, and they definitely are a real pleasure to get to know and share time with.
