Deidre Yumi Hamaguchi is an artist, professional fighter, and physics instructor. She enjoys drawing the human figure in pencil, charcoal, and watercolor, and discovered her passion for art growing up in Ottawa, Canada. Her first formal art instruction was as an architecture major at Yale; she fell in love with life drawing during a semester abroad in Paris, France. Deidre began painting watercolor portraits with a limited palette of four colors in 2022.
Deidre began drawing and painting portraits last year to challenge herself as an artist. For decades, she drew the full human figure and simply left out the face, fingers, and toes, as she struggled to render with the same accuracy as the torso and limbs. As a beginning painter, she decided to use a limited palette of four colors only: yellow, red, black, and white (the Zorn palette). The pieces shown are small because they were rendered from virtual sessions or photos viewed on a laptop. One of my artistic goals is to draw and paint at a larger scale, and in person.
