Clock Tower Art Panels
- Four aluminum stenciled panels
- Coronado School of the Arts
Four separate six by six foot panels, each representing a Coronado theme including a VW Van; the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge; a girl on a swing who bears a striking resemblance to Marilyn Monroe; and from the aerial species of the animal kingdom, we have a Heron in flight. The project began with a call came from the SIMA Corporation to Associate Coronado City Planner, Peter Fait. SIMA’s Director of AssetManagement Adam Geeb had the idea that the area could be used for a display of public art. The clock tower's clocks failed several years ago and they weren’t replaced and the clock mechanism was taken out. The Coronado School of the Arts Instructor, Karrie Jackson and her 25 students, collectively started the creative process and worked in teams to brainstorm and generate at least 20 images. Ten images were submitted to the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission. Four final designs based on qualities of composition and how the images would translate into strong stencil designs were submitted. The four murals were created by student art teams producing a total of 12 stencils (three for each design). Then using a process of projection, students increased the scale of the original computer-generated designs to six feet. The projections were then traced to produce the 12 six-foot stencils. The production is four-layer stencil art, building up a set of four single color layers that all together create an image. The hand cut stencils progressively pick up where the next layer of color goes. Once all the layers are built up, it becomes the final product.
