- Granite, bird-bath sculpture/fountain
Located at Goddard Hall / Communication Building
Winged Euonymus Fountain on the east side of the Goddard Hall, greets the campus community as they stroll passed the building along the nearby walkway. The design of this fountain, the broad rectangular form, communicates calm and quiet and offers a contemplative place to sit. When the water flows up from a birdbath-shaped bowl during the warmer months, it floods the smooth surface of the granite stone then gently overflows into a larger granite-framed basin that had been prepared on site in collaboration with Mark Masinda.
Winged Euonymus refers to an ornamental bush, whose leaves turn a brilliant red in the autumn, native to Northeast Asia and incorporated more recently into the New England landscape. Though one might imagine Phillips’ large granite fountain resting among the bushes in a formal Chinese garden, he created a contemplative garden haven, here. Our experience of Winged Euonymus is enhanced by the sight and sound of flowing water over its surface. He contrasts the organic, natural cut of the granite and movement of water with hand-sculpted triangular patterns atop the fountain surface.
