Suspended in the center of the soaring five-story atrium of Capital Community College is Latitude, a sculptural mediation on time and place. The artwork takes the form of a brilliant blue aluminum ring fringed with fine, laser-cut silhouettes. Supported on two architectural cross beams, the ring slowly and silently moves in synch with the earth: one rotation every 24 hours.

The city of Hartford is located at 41°7’ north latitude. Affixed to the outer edge of the central ring are delicate, filigreed symbols alluding to Hartford and to other locales and activities that share this latitude. Mountains and deserts, flora and fauna, cities and oceans – all are playfully depicted. Each day at noon the silhouettes of Capital Community College and the City of Hartford – gold leafed and thus distinct from the rest of the sculpture – arrive at the very topmost position.
