The title suggests that exploration is an element of education, and that education prepares us to explore throughout our careers and our lives. The sculpture attempts to distill and synthesize visually some of the tools of the explorer, both natural (the stars) and manmade (the sextant, the ship, the airplane). These elements are placed above a stepped, angled, triangle column, which places the dynamic elements of the sculpture so they can be seen from the road, above the parked cars, against the trees and the sky.
Explorer Column is fabricated of welded stainless steel. It is the toughest most corrosion resistant and durable of all the sculpture materials in current use. Moreover, the surface is very reflective and can be seen will at night with very little artificial light.
The sculpture is approximately twenty feet high, ten feet wide and eight feet in depth. It is installed on a seven foot diameter concrete base that is reinforced and extends 42 inches below grade.
