  • Artist: George Soppelsa (b. 1939)

George Soppelsa combines images of objects or people from disparate time periods to create collages that suggest timelessness and a removal from their original reality. Born in Youngstown, OH, he earned his BFA from Ohio State University, and lived in New York for ten years, then Florence for another twelve, where he began a full-time commitment to painting. He now lives in East Hartford, CT. Soppelsa has exhibited throughout the United States, Germany, and Italy at multiple museums and galleries, including Inter Art Gallerie Reich (Cologne, Germany), Homer Babbidge Library, University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT), The Butler Institute of American Art (OH), the Berkshire Museum (Pittsfield, MA), and the Slater Memorial Museum (Norwich, CT). He has also been awarded a Connecticut State Office of the Arts grant and a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship grant, among others.
