  • Artist: Cary Smith (b. 1955)

Cary Smith is a visual artist who paints geometric shapes and hard edges in bright, contrasting colors. Born in Puerto Rico, Smith has spent most of his life in Connecticut, where he currently lives in Farmington. He studied at the Syracuse University Art School (NY) and Sir John Cass Art School (London, England). He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions at locations such as the Derek Eller Gallery (NY), the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (MA), the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (WI), and the Wadsworth Antheneum (CT). Smith has also received multiple awards, including an Adolf and Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship.
